Volvo Ocean Race – offshore sailing regatta stage finish in Hong Kong.
Uniplan’s goal is to create that one special moment which makes the whole experience unique. Uniplan brings two strengths into play to achieve this: the magic of imagining the moment and the craftsmanship and technical expertise to realise that moment. Uniplan brings to life those visionary ideas that seem almost too fantastic to be feasible.
Uniplan’s goal is to create that one special moment that makes the whole experience unique. A moment that is personal, genuine and that connects. Uniplan brings two strengths into play to achieve this: the magic of imagining the moment and the craftsmanship and technical expertise to realise that moment. Uniplan brings to life those visionary ideas that seem almost too fantastic to be feasible.
The thirteenth Volvo Ocean Race launched in Alicante on 22 October 2017. From there, the regatta’s route was via Lisbon, Cape Town, Melbourne, Hong Kong, Guangzhou (only for an in-port race), Auckland, Itajai, Newport, Cardiff, Gothenburg to The Hague. At some 45,000 nautical miles, it was 6,000 nautical miles longer than before.
Seven boats were entered in the race: Brunel (NL), whose skipper Bouwe Bekking was taking part in his eighth Volvo Ocean Race, Dongfeng Race Team (CN), Mapfre (ES), Sun Hung Kai/Scallywag (HK), Team AkzoNobel (NL), Turn the Tide on Plastic and Vestas 11th hour racing (USA/DK). With the exception of Team AkzoNobel, all the teams were sailing yachts that previously participated in the 12th edition of the regatta, as the Volvo Ocean 65 class boats had been designed right from the start to take on two competitions.
Uniplan created, planned and built a “Race Village” in Hong Kong especially for the finish of the 5th stage of the 12th Volvo Ocean Race. Natural building materials, such as wood, promote well-being and make their own statement. More than 7,000 square metres of timura thermo wood was used in turning this “Race Village” into a visual highlight and a place where people were bound to feel good. The “Race Village” was the skippers’ and teams’ central communication centre at the Hong Kong stage finish, giving them the well-earned opportunity to take a break from the rigours of the stage.
The Volvo Ocean Race Village Experience also offered guests and aficionados an additional opportunity to take a peek behind the scenes. In the Race Village’s unique hospitality suite, they got to hear about the experiences of professional sailors, taste the freeze-dried food the sailors have to eat on board, try on a survival suit and crawl through a Volvo Ocean 65 racing yacht as well as get a feel for life behind the scenes at the shipyard during a Boat Experience.

The Wave Tree – art created from thermo wood.
Designer: Fred Zara and Gia Zapattini |Perkins + Will architecture firm
Sponsor: Smarter Choice Surfaces, Llc | Timura Wood
The Festival of the Trees is an annual fundraising event coordinated by the department of interior design at Florida International University.
The South Florida architectural and design community is supporting this festival with sponsorship. The funds will be used to promote high-quality interior design studies at Florida International University and will also support talented students.
Every year, designers and design companies create and build pieces of art, which are then judged against various categories at a major gala event before being auctioned off.
This year’s theme for the pieces of art was “timeless design”. The piece is meant to be creative, thematically suited to the Festival of Trees and does not necessarily have to be a tree. The other criteria were: most elegant, most colourful, most sustainable, most creative, most illuminating, most progressive, most whimsical, most topical, most animated.
Designers Fred Zara and Gia Zapattini from the architecture firm Perkins+Will created the piece of art entitled “The Wave Tree” for the festival. The tree is 1.5 m high and consists of 96 wooden leaves of different sizes, which were hand-made by timura. In order to enhance the leaves’ structure even further, they are illuminated from below by two LED lights integrated in the base of the object.
The two designers won an award at the 31st Festival of Trees on 16 November 2017 in Miami, Florida with this piece of art.

GARDENS BY THE BAY, SINGAPORE.
ONE OF THE WORLD’S MOST BEAUTIFUL PARKS WITH AWARD-WINNING ARCHITECTURE AND GARDEN DESIGN.
Gardens by the Bay puts the emphasis on sustainability. Hundreds of square metres of timura terrace flooring are laid on paths throughout the park. The alternating installation of brown-oiled thermo ash terrace flooring in two different surfaces is quite sophisticated. This installation technique is both beautiful and practical: the smooth terrace flooring is elegant in appearance and the “diamond” structure terrace flooring is anti-slip.
Thousands of visitors can enjoy the scent of roses and other flowers from all over the world every day. From cloud forests filled with orchids to replicas of Mediterranean gardens − there is so much to discover in this park with plants from all over the world.
The South American jungle and dry deserts of Australia are just two examples of the nine different gardens from the five main continents in the Flower Dome conservatory. In the nearby Cloud Forest, you can escape to cool highlands – to orchids, potted plants and ferns of the tropical mountain region.
In the Heritage Gardens you glean interesting facts about plants from Malaysia, China and India. Along the paths you can admire the wealth of sculptures, handicrafts and stonework informing you about the origin of the plants arranged all around you. Other highlights include the world’s largest indoor waterfall, airy paths with hanging gardens which you can stroll through 22 metres above the ground, and the breathtaking view of Marina Bay, framed by futuristic trees bathed in neon light.
